Our wonderful visit with Jill, Karl and Abby is about to end. We will leave in two days for Cheyenne, Wyoming and then head east toward Indiana for a couple of weeks prior to going back to Florida for Char’s doctor check-ins the first part of September. We have had a lot of fun here. We learned new things at the Wildlife Experience with Jill, Abby and their friends Christy and Sabrina. We enjoyed the animals and lunch at the Denver Zoo with this same fun group. This year we had the opportunity to revisit the Littleton Historical Museum Farm. It such good place to learn about life in the 1800’s. They have two farms one representing the 1860s and one the 1890s. If you are in the area, plan to stop and enjoy the farm animals and interact with the people in period costumes who help everyone understand what it was like to be a farmer during those times.
At our campground, Cherry Creek State Park, they have weekend ranger programs. At the first one we saw Birds of Prey – Hawk Quest with an owl, falcon, hawk and a golden eagle. The second was given by a friendly, bearded man in buckskin clothing, Possum the Mountain Man, a storyteller about life as a mountain man in the late 1700’s and the early 1800’s. They were very interesting and Abby was able to join us for both programs.
We also had many great meals at some wonderful restaurants. Some we visited more than once, Sweet Tomatoes (salads and more), Jasmine (Chinese) and Mama Roma’s (Italian) are some of Abby’s favorites. One of my favorites is the delightful pizza at Beau Jo’s restaurant. The thick roll of crust around the edge is perfect when eaten with honey for desert.
With all the good times and food we had, nothing compares with watching Abby play softball. Because of our extended stay, we were lucky enough to see four games and a couple of practices. Abby loves playing and it is a real joy to be able to watch her. We heard it said many times, by other parents and her coaches, that she is a very skilled player. She is learning valuable life lessons about good sportsmanship and respectful interaction with others. The most significant thing though, is while learning and having lots of fun, the final outcome, win or lose, is not extremely important to her. Hopefully she will continue to improve and perhaps sports could lead to great things for her in the future.
We had the opportunity to see Jill’s teaching partner, Makayla and her 5-month-old son Merrick. They stopped in at Jill’s while we were there. We met Makayla last summer while helping Jill get her room ready for the school year. She had given us some valuable tips about the Burlington, Colorado area, where she grew up, and recommended things to visit when we were in that part of the state. Merrick is in the early stages of communication. As Makayla, Mom and teacher, said, he is doing well with all the vowel sounds.
