August 2, 2007

I mentioned the Cheyenne boots in an earlier post. They are also today’s topic. Do you remember the song “These boots are made for walking” by Nancy Sinatra? The theme for the boot project in 2004 was “These boots are made for talking” and was hosted by the Cheyenne Depot Museum foundation and the Downtown Development Authority. A lot of the boots have found homes in other cities across the United States. It was thought that seventeen of the original twenty-six boots were still in the area. They still are able to generate lots of talking since they are in prominent places about town and are the subject of many tourists like us.

We enjoyed seeing a few the other day and decided we wanted to see all the remaining available boots. So we conducted our own scavenger hunt for the rest of the Cheyenne Boots we hadn’t seen. We purchased a book with all the information on the boots and we had a map from the Chamber of Commerce with the location of the boots. We put the information in the GPS and went off searching. We had a fun time driving all over Cheyenne. Since we wanted to follow the list in order, we passed some of the locations more than once.

Some of the boots were located inside of buildings and not easy to find. Vera and Char didn’t hesitate going inside and finding someone to help them. Some of the boots were recently moved out of town. One company had a safety contest and moved their boot to the winning office in Rapid City, South Dakota. Another moved theirs to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. One boot currently in the possession of Wal Mart was repainted for the Grand Opening of the local distribution center. It took a little while to find this one and get permission to go inside and take a picture.

While on our quest, we met the Director of the Foundation and the Chairman of the Board of Directors for FFA – Future Farmers of America. They were moving some painted animals that are for a promotion similar to the boot promotion. There are now cows, horses and pigs in various cities in Wyoming in preparation for an FFA Charity Auction next month. As we parted, we wished them good luck and said perhaps we will be back next year for our second scavenger hunt.

Everyone was extremely cordial and proud of his or her boot. One company offered Vera and Char refreshments as they inquired about taking some pictures. We had a remarkable time and here’s a tip of the hat to the people of Cheyenne.

Here are a few of today’s pictures:
